ARTIST STATEMENT / BIO
Lisa Corine von Koch (the Baroness Elsa von) is an artist, educator and a yogi, forged in the vividly beautiful desert of Moab, Utah, the so-called Adventure Capital of the World. There can be no denying the profound influence that growing up in the wild desert has had on her, making her an intrepid adventurer when it comes to making artwork. As a Ceremonial Documenter who fully inhabits the work she creates, Lisa blurs the lines between art and life, fluidly toying with identity and ritual, performance and visual art. In the interest of pushing herself to make continually more ambitious work, she devises elaborate situations into which so much has been invested that failure is impossible. She believes whole-heartedly in doing it in the real world.
Lisa has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Utah, and a Master’s of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. She currently teaches drawing courses as an Affiliate Faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her work has been selected for the Arizona Biennial and she has exhibited across the United States. She is the recipient of the Contemporary Forum Artist Grant from the Phoenix Art Museum, and has been awarded multiple fellowships to artist residencies including the Vermont Studio Center and the Santa Fe Art Institute.
