Carley Rickles is an artist and designer focused in ceramics and spatial design. Her work embodies a sense of contradiction; floating somewhere in between wonderment and rationality. Through illustrative narratives Rickles contemplates common, but unspoken, internal conflicts.
Things That Stack fixates on the human nature of accumulation. Rickles confronts the weight of sentimentality versus functionality, while surveying with scrutiny the human inclination to attach. Why do we hold onto things? Are they physical? Can they be held? How do you carry them? Through illustrative ceramics and domestic details she reveals the relationship between keepsakes, significance, and the ongoing desire (and conflict) to live in anytime but the present. Things That Stack embodies the reasoning of what holds us back and what propels us forward in our day to day lives.
