Join Alto Gallery Friday, July 7, 2017 for the opening reception of "It Came From the Drawing Board." Featuring new works from comic book artists Cody Kuehl, Daniel Crosier, G. Ka'aihue, J. James McFarland, and Rio Burton plus a special installation of new pieces by Charles Russell. 

Live music inside by Pythian Whispers. DJ set outside by Jewkes. Refreshments. Kid-friendly.

ABOUT

"It Came From the Drawing Board" explores the comic book art of several prominent local artists as well as the personal work they create outside of comics with a focus on retro sci-fi designs.  

The show will also feature a unique installation of nine new pieces by Charles Russell, featuring vintage devices from the 1910’s - 1960’s and over 500 recycled vacuum tubes to add to the experience.


DANIEL CROSIER graduated from RMCAD in 2000 with a BFA in sculpture. He is a mixed media artist and began the neo-kabuki performance group called OFM: OdAm fEI mUd in 2003. Crosier came on to the comic book scene in 2006, writing and illustrating Sons of Soil, The Exquisite Vanishteer, Distortions Unlimited, Vincent Price Presents, as well as illustrating Bartholomew of the Scissors and Caustic Soda. Crosier partnered with The Enigma (X-Files) and several other illustrators for the Show Devils comic book series. He has directed short films since 2005 and has released his first feature film Isolation Man, a mockumentary about a superhero who accidentally vanishes the western hemisphere.

RIO BURTON is a traveling, wolf-obsessed, chocolate-consuming illustrator. She loves illustrating anything with a fantastic narrative and especially loves fantasy and dark fictional genres. She primarily works in Photoshop and Illustrator. 

G. KA'AIHUE was born and raised in Pukalani, Hawaii, watching Japanese Sentai programs and cartoons. He spent his high school years in the mainland before moving overseas and graduating from Seoul Foreign School in Seoul Korea. He spent his early college years living and studying art in Kyoto, Japan, then moving to Savannah, Georgia and earning his B.F.A. in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

G.’s work has been exhibited in small galleries throughout Colorado and attends comic conventions, selling original illustrations and self-published comics.

He is an avid fan of pro wrestling and has spent time working for various Colorado promotions as a ringside announcer, play-by-play commentator, writer, booker, promoter, and marketer.

J. JAMES MCFARLAND is a commercial illustrator, fine artist, and graphic designer with over a decade of experience. Goal-oriented project management is not only his methodology -- it is his style of life.

Comics and sequential illustration are driving factors in his daily performance. Creating extremely marketable drawings, paintings, and designs are skills which fulfill him. Using creativity and his technical skills, he communicates ideas, sensations, facts, feelings, and emotions. He is currently located in the lush, green heights of Boulder, CO on the slopes of the Flatirons. There he enjoys breathing the clean air.

J. James is known to smile in the face of deadlines.

CODY KUEHL is a Colorado artist currently residing in Denver. His work is currently on display at Gallery 1505.

"Art should be provocative and fun. As an illustrator primarily, my work reflects an illustration background. In both my pop surreal and western paintings I look for moments of impact that tell a story either before, during, or after a critical moment to tell one-image tales. Often times I will utilize both non-objective and objective elements to clarify and blur the story so that the viewer can write their own tale and create a cooperative vision for the work." - Cody Kuehl

CHARLES RUSSELL's art is made from a combination of recycled vintage materials and modern electronics and is meant to be touched and interacted with. Vintage knobs, switches, cameras, speakers, and lights combine to create unique interactions for each user.
