Four Whales and a Dolphin

  • Helikon Gallery 3675 Wynkoop Street Denver, CO, 80216 United States (map)

About FOUR WHALES AND A DOLPHIN: ‘Four Whales and a Dolphin’ is a collection of work by Sierra Barela that explores different forms of making- from abstraction, to juxtaposing different mediums, to figuration. This work is largely influenced by the artist’s travels in recent years, in particular, time spent living in Rome, Italy in 2014 and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 2015. During her time in Rome, Barela traveled to Greece where she saw a simple line drawing of a dolphin spray painted on the side of a schoolyard building. The image inspired a theme of combining sincere, child-like innocence with aspects of daily adult life.

About SIERRA BARELA: Sierra Barela (b. 1993) received her BFA in Painting in 2015 from the Rhode Island School of Design. Barela was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center as well as the Horned Dorset Colony in 2015. Newly returned to Denver, she has also exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions in Rhode Island, Rome, Athens and New York City.
