ARTIST STATEMENT / BIO

"Reworking the surface of 16mm film, my work explores the inherent tension between states of consciousness and unconsciousness, human connection and disconnection. As an experimental filmmaker, I work primarily with abstraction to reveal and explore how our individual and collective memories and an underlying emotional superstructure shape identity and conditioned patterns. Through the use of hand processing and optical printing, I re-contextualize traditional images to propose an expanded visual lexicon of metaphor using the poetic observation these alternative techniques offer."

"Manipulation of the celluloid and camera-less filmmaking, including painting and drawing directly on the film’s surface, are techniques derived from the early avant-garde film movement. Through recording the juxtaposition of biomimetic patterns and the sun’s infinite shapes, forms, and mirages articulated through endless undulations of light, I attempt to move forward and push beyond the traditional frame of the camera, and the frame of traditional thought process— collaborating with light."
